A PAIR OF GILT-WOOD GREYHOUND CANDLESTICKS
REF: FA1552
This refined pair of Regency candlesticks beautifully unites the elegance of carved giltwood with the brilliance of cut glass. Each candlestick features a finely carved reclining greyhound, gilded to a warm, lustrous finish and resting gracefully on a stepped marble plinth. The sculptural form of the animals embodies the Neoclassical taste of the early 19th century, when stylised animal motifs were a mark of sophistication and fashionable design.
From the back of each figure rises a gently twisting ormolu candle arm, supporting a cut-glass nozzle. These are adorned with faceted crystal drops and icicle prisms, designed to catch and refract the candlelight, producing a soft, shimmering effect. The contrast between the warm gold tones of the ormolu, the cool translucence of the glass, and the pale marble base creates a composition of exceptional elegance.
